How to Prepare for House Cleaners Before They Arrive

How to Prepare for House Cleaners Before They Arrive

A professional clean should make your week easier, not create another long to-do list. Knowing how to prepare for house cleaners simply helps the team spend their booked time where it matters most: removing grime, refreshing high-use areas and leaving your home looking properly cared for.

You do not need to clean before cleaners arrive. A few practical preparations, however, can prevent delays, protect your personal items and make sure the visit reflects your priorities. Think of it as setting the scene for a more efficient, detail-focused result.

How to prepare for house cleaners without pre-cleaning

The most useful preparation is clearing access, not scrubbing surfaces. Put away loose items from floors, benchtops and bathroom vanities where possible. Toys, paperwork, clothes, charging cables and small household items can slow a cleaner down because each one needs to be moved, sorted around or left untouched.

This does not mean every room needs to look perfect. Cleaners are there to help with the housework. The goal is simply to give them a clear path to vacuum, mop, wipe and dust the areas included in your service. If the kitchen bench is covered with post, appliances and dishes, for example, the cleaner may have less room and time to clean the actual bench thoroughly.

Pay particular attention to the floors. Pick up items that could be damaged, misplaced or caught in a vacuum, including pet toys, small building blocks, coins and cords. Move laundry from the floor into a basket, and make sure paths between rooms are safe and clear.

If you would like a particular room cleaned but it is heavily used for storage, let the cleaning provider know in advance. It may still be possible to clean around items, but clear expectations avoid disappointment on the day.

Decide what matters most before the visit

Every home has different pressure points. One household may want bathrooms restored after a busy week, while another needs help keeping kitchen surfaces, floors and pet hair under control. Before the appointment, take a quick walk through your home and identify the jobs that will make the greatest difference.

Share those priorities when booking or before the cleaner arrives. Be specific where it helps. “Please focus on the shower screen and stovetop” is clearer than “Give the bathroom and kitchen extra attention”. If a guest is arriving, a rental inspection is approaching or you have been unwell, mention it. The team can then work with the right context and within the time booked.

It is also worth confirming the scope. A standard house clean generally focuses on routine areas such as bathrooms, kitchen surfaces, dusting, vacuuming and mopping. Oven interiors, inside cupboards, interior windows, wall marks and heavy mould may require a deep-cleaning service or extra time. Clear communication protects the quality of the result and prevents assumptions on either side.

Point out delicate surfaces and problem areas

Natural stone, unsealed timber, antique furniture and specialty finishes can need a different approach from standard surfaces. Tell your cleaner about anything that requires special care, especially if you have a preferred product or method.

The same applies to areas that need attention for a specific reason. A leaking tap, a loose floor tile, a stubborn stain or a shower door that sticks should be flagged before cleaning begins. Cleaners can work safely around known issues, but they cannot repair damage or take responsibility for faults that were already present.

Secure valuables, private papers and medicines

Professional cleaners should be trained, vetted and respectful in your home. Even so, putting away valuables and sensitive items is sensible preparation for any service visit. Store jewellery, cash, passports, important documents, prescription medicines and sentimental small items in a secure place.

This is not about mistrust. It gives everyone clarity and peace of mind, particularly when cleaners are working across several rooms. It also prevents a valuable item being accidentally moved with a pile of paperwork or knocked from a crowded shelf.

If there are rooms, cupboards or areas you do not want accessed, say so clearly. Close the door, leave a note if needed and mention it at handover. A professional team will respect those boundaries.

Make access straightforward and safe

Reliable access is one of the biggest factors in a smooth appointment. If you will be home, decide who will greet the cleaner and show them through the property. If you will be out, arrange access in advance through a key safe, building concierge, authorised key collection or another agreed method.

For apartment homes, provide any details needed for visitor parking, lifts, intercoms or loading access. In busy Adelaide streets, practical parking information can save valuable time at the start of the service. Let the team know about gates, steep driveways, stairs or access restrictions as well.

Please make sure electricity and running water are available. Cleaners may need power points for vacuum equipment and water for mopping and bathroom cleaning. If there is a known issue with either, advise the provider before the appointment so suitable arrangements can be discussed.

Plan for pets, children and working from home

Pets are part of the family, but they can be unsettled by unfamiliar people, vacuum noise and open doors. Let the cleaning team know in advance if you have pets, especially dogs that may bark, become anxious or need to be kept away from certain areas. Where practical, secure pets in a comfortable room, backyard or separate area while the clean is underway.

If you work from home, tell the cleaner which room is your workspace and whether you will be on calls. They can often sequence the service around your schedule, such as cleaning another area first. Some noise is unavoidable during vacuuming and moving through the home, so a little planning makes the visit easier for everyone.

Young children also need a safe, predictable arrangement. Avoid leaving small children unsupervised while cleaners are using equipment or moving between rooms. If a child is napping, mention the room and your preferred timing, while understanding that this may affect the order of tasks.

Set up the home for the service you booked

A few small actions can help cleaners deliver a better finish. Emptying an overly full kitchen sink gives them access to the basin and surrounding surfaces. Removing bath toys and personal toiletries from the shower makes it easier to clean tiles, screens and taps. Opening blinds where you want window areas cleaned, and ensuring bins are accessible, can also help.

For a deep clean, move-out clean or inspection clean, preparation may be more involved. Properties often need to be largely empty, with personal belongings removed and utilities connected. If furniture remains, the cleaner can usually work around it, but they may not be able to clean underneath large or immovable pieces without prior agreement.

Do not use strong chemicals immediately before the appointment in an effort to help. Mixing products or leaving chemical residue can create safety risks and makes it harder to assess the condition of a surface. If you have already treated a stain or used a product on a particular area, let the cleaner know exactly what was applied.

Be available for a quick handover and final check

A five-minute conversation at the start can save a lot of uncertainty later. Confirm the rooms included, your top priorities, access arrangements and any special instructions. If you cannot be there, leave clear written notes and make sure the cleaning provider has a reliable contact number.

At the end of the service, if possible, complete a brief walkthrough. This is the best time to raise a question or identify an area that needs a closer look. Quality cleaning providers want feedback while it can be acted on promptly, and a satisfaction guarantee is most useful when concerns are communicated clearly.

Preparing for a cleaner is not about doing their job first. It is about removing the small obstacles that get in the way of a thorough, professional clean. Clear floors, clear instructions and easy access give your cleaner the time to focus on the sparkle you want to come home to.
